Departmental Information

Our department has twelve full-time and tenure-track faculty. Just this year we added five new faculty to our roster (Catherine DeRivera, Marion Dresner, Elise Granek, Linda George, and Julie Smith). We also have an additional fifteen or more associated faculty, adjunct faculty and research staff.

Recent News

Our program name has been changed to reflect our growing emphasis on science and management. We are now the Environmental Sciences and Management Program. Earlier this year we merged with three full-time faculty and multiple staff from the Center for Science Education. We now offer the Natural Science Inquiry SINQ and the Science in the Liberal Arts cluster in our program.

Mission Statement
Approved by the faculty November 29, 2006

Environmental Science and Management is the study of the interactions between society and the physical, chemical, ecological, and biological processes that structure and maintain ecosystems. Our work is critical to understanding and developing sustainable ecosystems, human societies, and economies. Environmental Science and Management at PSU focuses on processes that link terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, consequences of human alteration of those linkages, and development of policies to manage human interaction with the environment. We conduct our research by studying organisms and specific linkages and processes across systems and by studying interactions between organisms, processes, and linkages in a specific ecosystem or watershed, such as the Columbia River Basin. We teach the concepts of Environmental Science and Management to pre-college and professional as well as to undergraduate and graduate students

Because of the unique interdisciplinary and international nature of Environmental Science and Management, the faculty recognize the benefit of collaborations. Environmental Science and Management faculty currently collaborate with colleagues from multiple departments and colleges at PSU and elsewhere. We seek expansion of our teaching and research collaborations with individuals, organizations, and programs with complementary approaches, such as the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, to offer our students a better understanding of the breadth of Environmental Science and Management, to expand the international character and diversity of our campus, and to enhance the impact of our research.

We offer a wide range of courses in environmental sciences and management. These courses lead to two degrees offered by the department, Environmental Studies and Environmental Science. The Environmental Studies degree is new, as of 2006, as part of a collaboration with Geography. This new degree has already approximately doubled our undergraduate program. We also offer two minors; Environmental Science and Sustainability.

There are three graduate degrees offered by the department. The Masters of Science (thesis research degree), Masters of Environmental Management (project with a community partner) and the Master of Science in Teaching.

Environmental Programs is an active participant in the Environmental Sciences and Resources interdepartmental PhD.

Faculty and students in our program are involved in a wide range of research from the biological behavior of green crab larva or algae to international policies that relate to valuing natural capital.

research

An important part of our interdepartmental mission is to work closely with other areas of campus. For example, we have teaching and or research collaborations with Sustainability Center, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Geography, Geology, Biology and other departments.

Environmental Programs has grown in the last two years; adding three new faculty, a new degree shared with Geography, an institute with the Smithsonian Institute and a research collaborative with USGS. We have plans for continued improvement and growth by elaborating on our collaboration with Geography and Geology.

Environmental Programs is different than most other departments at PSU in that we also host three research centers or programs. These are the Center for Lakes and Reservoirs, the Aquatic Bioinvasions Research and Policy Institute (collaboratively with the Smithsonian Institute) and the Environmental Professional Program.
