Program Objectives
The purpose of ESR graduate programs is to provide a curriculum that
will develop scientists, managers, and educators who are able to analyze
and understand environmental systems, predict environmental change and
participate in the management of the environment. Each student conducts
research and completes a thesis or project; each student develops depth
in a specific academic area; and each student develops breadth through
a set of core courses that include concepts in physical sciences, life
sciences, social sciences.
Joint Campus
Program in Environmental Sciences, Studies, and Policy
ESR participates in the joint campus program in environmental sciences,
studies, and policy. The joint campus program is a collaborative effort
of Portland State, Oregon State University, and the University of Oregon.
Students may take appropriate courses at the other participating campuses.
Additionally, faculty from the universities will be offering courses
on other campuses and serving on graduate committees.

Admission
Requirements
Admission requirements include a science-based baccalaureate degree
or equivalent training and evidence of course work in biology, chemistry,
geology, physics and mathematics (including calculus). Students will
only be admitted if an appropriate ESR advisor can be identified.
An application includes the following components which are forwarded
directly to the ESR Office:
- a letter of
application and a statement of educational and career goals
- a completed
departmental application form, with a professional resume attached
- copies of transcripts
of college and university work
- three letters
of recommendation
- scores on the
Graduate Record Examination general test
Additionally, formal acceptance into the University's graduate program
requires students to submit to the Admissions Office:
- A PSU graduate
application and
- official transcripts
of all college and university course work.
ESR informs
the Admissions Office when students are accepted.
Students with deficiencies in particular areas can be admitted as post-baccalaureate
students or with departmental conditions which must be satisfied within
the first one or two quarters after admission.
